A. S. (Angela) Byatt is an English novelist, poet, and literary critic who is best known for her 1990 novel Possession: A Romance. Byatt was born in Sheffield and graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English. She has won numerous awards, including the Booker Prize, the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize, and the 2009 Prix Mondial Cino Del Duca. Her novels and short stories often revolve around female characters and center on themes such as feminism, spirituality, and the relationship between art and life. Byatt has also written several works of literary criticism and non-fiction, and has been a professor of literature at both University College London and the University of East Anglia during her career.
