Abdelaziz Bouteflika
Abdelaziz Bouteflika was one of Algeria's longest serving and most influential political figures. He served as president of Algeria from 1999-2019. During his tenure he focused on improving the country's economy, stabilizing security, and restoring Algeria's international relations. He launched a number of projects to spur economic activity and modernize Algeria, among them an ambitious youth employment program. He also was the architect of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, which allowed those involved in the civil war to receive amnesty or reparations without facing trial. His efforts in this area were widely praised, and allowed Algeria to move out of a long period of conflict. He was a major proponent of the Arab Spring, and often called for reform across the region. Despite his populist rhetoric, Bouteflika's rule was marked by a concentration of power and a lack of political pluralism.
