Abigail Adams (1744-1818) was an American writer, patriot, and the First Lady of the United States (1797-1801) during her husband John Adams' presidency. A prominent figure in the American Revolution, Adams was an active promoter of women’s rights and education. She was the sister of another famous patriot, John Quincy Adams, who later became the sixth President of the United States. She advocated for the education of women and the rights of married women, expressing her views in advise to her husband while he was writing the Declaration of Independence. In addition to her political writings, Adams penned many letters, including critiques of slavery and the American Revolution. She greatly influenced her husband's presidency and her son's career in politics.
