Adlai E. Stevenson

Adlai E. Stevenson was an American statesman and politician. He was the 23rd Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897, and the Democratic presidential nominee during the 1952 and 1956 U.S. Presidential elections. Stevenson also served as Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953. He was known for his progressive policies and support for civil liberties throughout his career. His public oratory skills, or gift of gab, as well as his wit, charisma and eloquence, earned him the nickname "The Great Debater." He died at the age of 81 on July 14, 1965.
