Adlai Stevenson
Adlai Stevenson was a statesman and politician who served as the 23rd Vice President of the United States from 1893 to 1897 and the 23rd Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953. He was the Democratic candidate in both the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, losing both times to Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a prominent advocate for civil rights, and was a staunch supporter of the United Nations and a critic of McCarthyism. He was also known for his eloquence and his wit, and was often referred to as "The Great Igniter" for his impact on the Democratic Party, to which he brought a new boost in enthusiasm over his two presidential campaigns. Stevenson died in 1965, leaving a legacy of respect and admiration among his peers.
