Al Franken is an American comedian, actor, writer, and politician, who served as the junior United States Senator from Minnesota from 2009 to 2018. Franken was born in New York City, New York in 1951 and studied at Harvard College, graduating in 1973. After graduating, he became a writer and performer on the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, for which he won four Emmy Awards in his five years with the show. He also wrote and starred in the movie Stuart Saves His Family, and his five books, including Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations, have also become successful. Franken became a Democratic-farmer-Labor Senator in 2009, and is credited with having secured five legislative achievements, including jobs and tax cuts, during his tenure in the Senate. He resigned in 2017 after allegations of sexual misconduct during his time as a comedian and radio host, though he denied all allegations. Franken was also a featured speaker at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. He currently resides in Minneapolis with his wife and remains active in political, entertainment, and media circles.
