Alan Parker was one of the most successful and acclaimed British filmmakers of all-time. He rose to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s with a string of highly successful films, including Midnight Express (1978), Fame (1980), Mississippi Burning (1988), and The Commitments (1991). He made his directorial debut in 1976 with Melody, a romantic drama that earned him his first BAFTA award. Throughout his career, Parker directed more than 40 feature films and was honored with numerous awards, including a BAFTA Fellowship, Cannes Film Festival awards, and the Order of the British Empire. His final film, the Catholic Church drama We Need to Talk About Kevin, was released in 2011. He died in 2020, at the age of 76.
