Alan Shepard
Alan Shepard was an American astronaut and test pilot. He was the first American to travel in space, and the fifth person to ever travel in space. He served in the US Navy, and he was part of the group of astronauts known as “The Mercury Seven.” In 1961, Shepard became the first American to leave the Earth’s atmosphere and reach space in his capsule called “Freedom 7.” He later went on the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, making him the fifth person to walk on the moon. He was a decorated officer in the US Navy, Air Force, and NASA. He received many awards in his lifetime, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Shepard died in 1998 at the age of 74.
