Alan Sillitoe was an English author and playwright, renowned for his raw and hard-hitting novels about the working class of Nottingham which featured the famous character of Arthur Seaton. His first novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1959) and his second novel The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1959) made him a major figure in the British "Angry Young Men" movement. During his career, he wrote more than 50 books and plays, as well as a significant amount of non-fiction in the form of essays and poetry. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential British writers of the 20th century.
