Albert Claude (1899-1983) was a Belgian doctor and scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974. He is best known for his work on cell anatomy and for his involvement in the pioneering of cell fractionation, for which he is often considered the founder. He also developed staining techniques which allowed scientists to differentiate structures in cells, as well as working on the important discovery of mitochondrial structure. His research also helped to pioneer electron microscopy.Claude further undertook pioneering research in the field of unicellular organics, particularly in chloroplasts in plants.
