Albert Hofmann

Albert Hofmann was a Swiss scientist best known for being the first person to synthesize, ingest, and learn of the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). He authored more than 100 scientific articles and several books. He is also noted for chemists’ discovery of the psychoactive alkaloid psilocybin, which is found in certain mushrooms. Hofmann worked at the pharmaceutical-chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories, now Novartis, located in Basel, Switzerland, from 1943 to 1971. During this time there he also studied the therapeutic effects of psychoactive drugs and authored more than 100 scientific articles and several books. He died at the age of 102, on April 29, 2008, at his home in Burg im Leimental, Switzerland. He is remembered for his enormous contributions to the understanding of the effects and chemical structure of psychedelics and for the generations of researchers he influenced through his groundbreaking research and writings.
