Albert Payson Terhune was an American author and dog breeder, best known for his iconic collie dog Sunnybank Kennels. He wrote over 40 novels about his collies, which were set mostly at the Sunnybank estate in the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey. His works have sold millions of copies, and he has been credited with single-handedly creating the "animal story" genre. He was given the title of "the Collie King of America" as a result of his highly successful breeding program. He was also a passionate advocate for animal rights, setting up a dog rescue network throughout North America and creating legislation to prevent animal cruelty. In addition to his literary works, Terhune was an active conservationist and humanitarian. After his death in 1942, he was remembered as a pioneer in animal care and literature.
