Albert Pinkham Ryder Quotes

Albert Pinkham Ryder

Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917) was an influential American painter known for his cryptic, expressive canvases of moody, mythic scenes. He had a major influence on the emergence of modern art in America, especially with expressionism and surrealism. He began his career as a tonalist inspired by the lyrical works of the Hudson River School, however he gradually moved away from these conventions towards new ideas which ultimately made him a key figure in the development of American art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is also remembered for his preoccupation with death, which led to his eventual demise in an asylum where he died in 1917.
