Alberto Fujimori Quotes

Alberto Fujimori

Alberto Fujimori is a Japanese-Peruvian politician and former president of Peru who governed from 1990 to 2000. He was responsible for enacting neoliberal reforms and restoring Peru’s economy after severe economic crisis in the country. Fujimori's economic successes were matched with his political successes, including his successful fight against terrorism and his dismantling of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla movement. He reformed Peru's military and security forces, focusing on an anti-terrorist campaign led by the now defunct Comando Conjunto, a mixed force between police and military. His achievements in security policy have been met with mixed evaluations, as his anti-terrorist tactics also included the use of extrajudicial killings. In 2000, Fujimori's authoritarianism and his violation of Peruvian law led to his resignation and departure from Peru before impeachment proceedings were launched against him. In 2007, Fujimori was extradited from Chile to face Peruvian justice and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for authorizing forced disappearances. In December 2017, Fujimori received a pardon from President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski for humanitarian reasons.
