Alexander Hamilton Stephens
Alexander Hamilton Stephens was an American lawyer and politician who served as Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Georgia before the war, and later returned to the House during the Reconstruction Era. While in the Confederate government, Stephens made several proposals to end the war and bring the seceding states back into the Union, all of which were rejected. During his career, Stephens opposed the abolition of slavery, supported the Union's constitutionality, and publicly aligned with the Whig and Democratic parties. Notably, he authored the Cornerstone Speech, which defended slavery and criticized non-slave-holding states on account of their refusal to uphold constitutional principles. After the war, Stephens was convicted of treason, though he was later pardoned.
