Alexander Lukashenko
Alexander Lukashenko is the current president of Belarus and has served in the role since 1994. He is known for his authoritarian style of government, which has caused him to be criticized internationally for human rights violations and lack of democratic process in Belarus. He has also come under fire domestically for alleged electoral fraud. He has been re-elected repeatedly in elections deemed not free or fair by foreign observers. Lukashenko has sought to maintain Belarus's independence from Russia and to preserve Belarusian culture and language in the face of Russian influence.
