Alexis Herman
Alexis Herman was the 23rd United States Secretary of Labor (1997–2001) during the Clinton administration. Her tenure as Secretary of Labor was marked by her successes in increasing the minimum wage, welfare reform, and expanding the availability of health care benefits. She was the first African American woman to hold a Cabinet-level leadership position in the U.S. government. She was also the first African American woman to be the chair of the Democratic National Convention in 2000. Herman was an important advocate for issues of workforce development during her time as Secretary of Labor and she served as a critical voice in the Clinton administration for issues involving civil rights, poverty, and economic opportunity.
