Alfred Austin Quotes

Alfred Austin

Alfred Austin was an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1896. After a career as a journalist, Austin was initially more successful as a poet and writers of prose works, though he is best remembered for the works he composed as Poet Laureate. His poems were noted for their light verse style, as well as their patriotism. In addition to writing poems, Austin was also a student of Orientalism, which he explored in his 1902 book, The India We Serve. Austin also wrote books on gardening, including Flowers and Their Pedigrees and The Garden that I Love. He was an advocate of rural cottage flower gardens, promoted in his column in Home Magazine. Austin supported the British imperial cause, writing in praise of the Empire and has been considered to be one of the last poets to express British patriotism in verse.
