Alfred E. Smith Quotes

Alfred E. Smith

Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944) was an American politician from New York who served as the state's governor from 1919-1920 and 1923 to 1928, and also ran as the Democratic Party's candidate for President of the United States in 1928. He was the first Catholic candidate to be nominated by a major party for the office and became perhaps the best-known and most popular Catholic politician in the country. Smith was a progressive leader who championed the rights of the working class, labor rights, and economic equality. He was a strong defender of immigrants and civil rights. During his administration, he reformed the state's tax code, improved employee protections, and expanded public education. After his election loss in 1928, he founded the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, which focuses on charitable works and historically preserves his legacy.
