Alfred P. Sloan was a legendary American business executive and philanthropist. He served as the president, CEO and Chairman of General Motors (GM) between 1923 and 1956. Sloan is credited with modernizing the American auto industry by bringing it stability and turning it into one of the most profitable companies in the world. He also introduced the concept of planned obsolescence, as well as cutting-edge organizational and managerial techniques, at GM which were later adopted by other companies. After GM, Sloan went on to be the CEO of GM's other subsidiary companies, such as Chevrolet and GMAC. He was also an active philanthropist and highly regarded civic leader. He created the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which has undertaken various initiatives in science and technology, healthcare, the environment and education.
