Allan Bloom

Allan Bloom was an American philosopher, classicist, and academician. He was known for his best-selling book The Closing of the American Mind and for his role in criticizing the contemporary culture in America during the 1980s. Bloom was a professor of social thought at the University of Chicago from 1960-92 where he taught courses on politics and literature, as well as courses from Sophocles to Plato to Nietzsche. He was an advocate for the Great Books tradition of liberal arts education, advocating for its relevance even to students of the most contemporary culture. He was also a senior editor at the National Review, editing the books and culture section. Bloom was a controversial figure and his work has been praised and criticized by various academics.
