Anatoly Karpov

Anatoly Karpov is a legendary chess grandmaster, who was Chess World Champion from 1975 to 1985. Born in Zlatoust, Russia in 1951, he was awarded the Grandmaster title at the age of 19, making him the youngest ever Grandmaster. He won the World Chess Championship without playing the match which was intended to decide the title in 1975, after Bobby Fischer, the defending champion, refused to play the match. Karpov successfully defended his title six times in the ensuing decade and is considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Over the course of his career, Karpov has won numerous domestic and international tournaments, including the World Rapid Chess Championship (2009) and the World Blitz Chess Championship (2013). Karpov is also known for his work in promoting chess as an educational tool in schools and communities, and for his philanthropic activities, such as providing humanitarian aid to underprivileged children in Russia.
