Andrzej Sapkowski is a Polish fantasy writer and novelist known for his bestselling book series The Witcher, which inspired the video game adaptation by the same name. Sapkowski was born in 1948 in Łódź, Poland. As a student, he worked as a translator before studying economy at the University of Łódź. In 1980, he left economic studies, to become a full-time writer and began writing his first short stories and novels. In 1987, his short story "The Witcher" was published in the Polish science fiction and fantasy magazine Fantastyka. This story eventually became the basis for the popular Witcher series. The Witcher book series, known as The Witcher Saga, has been bestsellers across Europe and has been translated into more than 20 languages. In addition to the Witcher series, Sapkowski has written a number of other fantasy works, including two historical novels and several standalone novels, as well as a TV series. He is widely considered a major figure in Polish literature and his books have won numerous awards, including the Spójnia literary award, the Golden Dragon Prize and the Gummarez Science Fiction Award.
