Angela Carter was a British novelist, short story writer and journalist from the late twentieth century. She is best known for her wildly imaginative, feminist fairy tales and works of science fiction, and her novels often explore the extreme and surreal. Her short stories are noted for their allegorical themes and critique of patriarchy, particularly in the 1976 collection The Bloody Chamber. She was an advocate for the experimental and experimental forms, often using surreal, Baroque and Gothic elements. Carter was active in causes related to the women’s movement, and was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, among other honors.
