Angela Davis is an American activist, scholar, and author. She is best known for her activism and scholarship around issues of race, gender, class, and mass incarceration. As a prominent voice of the Black Panther movement and a member of the Communist Party USA, she was arrested in 1970 and tried for conspiracy and attempted murder. Davis was found not guilty in a highly publicized trial in 1972. She continued her activism on issues relating to civil rights, racism, and injustice in the United States, becoming an advocate for prison reform and a leader in the developing critical prison studies movement. Her writing includes six books and countless essays, focusing primarily on critical theory, feminism, race, and the U.S. prison system. Davis currently teaches in the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
