I?ve been offered a lot but I want to stay away from romance, comedies and fluffy work. I met Stephen Spielberg at a breast cancer benefit and he explained that he?d seen me on Saturday Night Live and thought I was ready for a movie. He said, ?You go to the ledge and are unafraid to jump off.? That was the biggest compliment to me because he was saying I was free.
Acting is about giving something away, handing yourself over to whatever role you are asked to play. I'm not hiding or escaping or seeking anonymity. I reserve the right not to have a rubber stamp on my forehead saying this is who I am. Because who I am gets in the way of people looking innocently at the parts I play.
My mother wanted me to be a lawyer and I wanted to be an Actor. So I went to school, majored in theatre, and said 'Mom, I have to choose my own destiny. I want to be an actor.' A couple of weeks after I graduated college I called my mother up and said 'Can I borrow 00?' and she said 'Why don't you act like you've got 00.'
You know what, I'm very interested in acting, but right now I'm busy promoting my album and going on tour because that's my first love, but I'm very interested in doing some parts that may come my way. I've been offered a few movie parts so far, but I have to really concentrate on singing. But it's something I'm interested in doing eventually. I haven't been offered a part that truly inspires me to take time off, though.
The beauty about being a natural actor is just being yourself without getting caught up with how you think a role should be performed. The horror many novices face is not knowing that the natural counts much more than the pretention of being somebody else. The more natural you are then the more convincing the interpreted role will be. The horror many professionals face is that pretending to be natural eventually catches up with them.
Actors become actors because they loved entertaining their family by putting on the lampshade and dancing around as a kid, ... That's not my personality. For me, the fun part of making movies is seeing it as a director sees it. I like the architecture of movies. I like knowing what's coming and working to set that up.
