Ai Sugiyama
Ai Sugiyama is a professional Japanese tennis player who is considered one of the most successful Japanese athletes of all time. She is the first Japanese player, male or female, to ever break into the top 10, and the first Japanese player to ever be ranked world No. 1 in the doubles rankings. She is also the only Japanese player to have ever competed in all four Grand Slam singles events. With her success, Sugiyama became a national hero in Japan, earning a seat on the Japanese Olympic committee and inspiring generations of young people to play tennis. Sugiyama retired from professional tennis in 2011 after twenty-two years of play.
