Sir Alan Bates was an English actor best known for his roles in classic films, theater plays, and television series. He was born in Heworth, North Riding of Yorkshire in 1934 and died in London in 2003. Over the course of his career, he was nominated for both Golden Globe and Academy Awards for his performances. He was best known for his roles in Gambit (1966), Zorba the Greek (1964), and An Unmarried Woman (1978). His theater work included lauded performances in John Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1956), Peter Shaffer's Equus (1973), and August Strindberg's The Dance of Death (1977). He won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor for his role in The Most Fatal Weakness (1976) and later played the lead role in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (2002).
