Albert Gallatin
Albert Gallatin was an influential leader who served in both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate, including a term as the longest-serving United States Secretary of the Treasury. Gallatin was born in 1761 in Geneva, Switzerland and immigrated to the American colonies in 1780. He served in Congress from 1795 to 1801 and from 1807 to 1813. During his years in Congress and especially as Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin was known for emphasizing fiscal responsibility and minimizing the national debt. He was instrumental in creating numerous government institutions, such as the Bank of the United States, the Department of the Treasury, and the Coast Guard. Gallatin also negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with France and was a major advocate for a peaceful resolution to the War of 1812. In 1823, Gallatin retired from public service, but later returned to Europe to help refugees of the Revolutions of 1848. Gallatin died in 1849 in Astoria, New York.
