Amien Rais
Amien Rais is an Indonesian politician who served as the Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia from 1999 to 2004. He is a strong proponent of democracy and helped lead Indonesia's transition to democracy following the fall of the authoritarian President Suharto in 1998. Rais has held a variety of positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Commission on Human Rights, National Commission on Violence against Women, and other governmental bodies. In June 2019, he was elected leader of the National Mandate Party (PAN). He is also known for his efforts in advocating a "third way" when it comes to political debate, which emphasizes the power of civil society as a way to bring about economic and political reform in Indonesia. He also serves as a lecturer at the University of Indonesia and continues to be an important voice in debates about Indonesian politics and society.
