Abdullah Ocalan
Abdullah Ocalan is a Kurdish leader and the founder of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) who since 1999 has been serving a life prison sentence in Turkey. He was born in 1949 in the Ocalan kingdon of Turkish Kurdistan and was the youngest of four sons. Ocalan is often seen as the most significant Kurdish figure in history and has been both revered and reviled for his cause. Throughout his life, Ocalan has championed the cause of Kurdish rights, self-determination and freedom from military oppression by the Tukish state. On several occasions, he has declared ceasefires and openings to peace talks with the Turkish government. In 1999, he was arrested in Kenya and sentenced to life in prison in Turkey, sparking international outcry. He remains a notable political figure in the region and an inspiration to many who seek Kurdish rights.
