Abdus Salam

Abdus Salam was a Pakistani physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for his work in electroweak theory. He also won several other prestigious awards, including the Wolf Prize in Physics. Born in 1926 in British-ruled India, he was the first Pakistani to receive a Nobel Prize. He completed his schooling in Lahore, Pakistan and graduated from the Punjab University in 1945. He proceeded to study at Cambridge and eventually got a PhD from the University of London in 1951. His work focused on the early universe and his research into the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces of nature. He was a founding member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. Outside of his research, Salam was also a strong advocate for promoting education and science in his native country of Pakistan. He died in 1996 at the age of 70.
