Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani
Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was a powerful Iranian leader and politician who served as President of Iran from 1989 to 1997. He was originally a senior appointed member of the Iranian Revolution that overthrew the Shah and subsequently became a strong advocate for openness and coexistence with the West. Rafsanjani was a powerful politician, having served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament from 1980 to 1989, Chairman of the Expediency Council from 1989 to 2017, and Supreme Leader of Iran from 1981 to 1989. His tenure as President saw a period of relative political and economic stabilization during which Iran strengthened its position as a regional power. He was regarded as a moderate who pursued politically astute and pragmatic policies. After leaving office, Rafsanjani remained a powerful political figure in Iran, and was regularly engaged in Iranian politics until his death in 2017.
