Alain Resnais (June 3, 1922 – March 1, 2014) was a French film director and screenwriter whose career extended over more than six decades. He is best known for films such as Hiroshima mon amour (1959), Last Year at Marienbad (1961), L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961), Muriel (1963), and Mon oncle d'Amérique (1980). He was also noted for his documentary work, particularly Van Gogh (1948) and Night and Fog (1955). Resnais earned four César Awards, including one for Best Director, and was nominated five times for an Academy Award. Along with Alan Ayckbourn, Yukio Ninagawa, Luis Buñuel, and Fritz Lang, Resnais was one of the leading filmmakers of the French New Wave.
