Alexander Berkman
Alexander Berkman (1870-1936) was a renowned Russian anarchist, writer, and political activist who fought against the oppressive power of the Tsarist regime in Russia. He was a pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of direct action, best exemplified by his Philosophical Anarchism. He was a major participant in the Homestead strike of 1892 and was sent to prison for a crime of passion in 1892, which also generated great sympathy for him. During World War I he turned his attention to the conflict in Europe, and spent three years in exile with paper for the anarchist journal Mother Earth. He was a longstanding advocate of the cause of the Russian revolution, and was the first to suggest the idea of a mass strike. He is remembered as an important figure of the radical left and as a symbol of uncompromising resistance to oppression.
