Alphonse Daudet was a famous French novelist and playwright, best known for writing his autobiographical series of novels In the Land of Pain and the collection of shorter works Tales from the Hills. He was a renowned author of the 19thcentury Naturalism period and was closely associated with other Naturalists such as Emile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. He was a master of the short-story form and his work has an honesty and realism that has stood the test of time. He also wrote numerous poems and plays, his best-known works being The Nabob and Balthasar. He was highly acclaimed in his own lifetime and was elected to the Academie francaise in 1884. Despite his success and fame, however, his life was often marred with tragedy and sadness, with his beloved literary works chronicling his hardships and struggles.
