While the judge is certainly within his right -- given the length of this trial and the amount of resources spent on it -- to really try to coax this jury into continuing its deliberation, there is a limit.

It goes on as long as the judge thinks he can get along with making it go on, the only standard is that it can't go on if it becomes coercive, and that's a judgment call.

What you don't want to have happen is jurors holding out, who really have a reasonable doubt, to think they're being held hostage.

If you fail on either of these two counts, your case will disappear in front of your eyes.

And then a throb hits you on the left ide of the head so hard that your head bobs to the right.. There's no way that came from inside your head, you think. That's no metaphysical crisis. God just punched you in the face.
