Andrew Melville

Andrew Melville (1545-1622) was a prominent Scottish theologian, scholar, and reformer. He was a leading figure at the centre of 16th- and 17th-century Scottish Reformed thinking and was influential in Scottish education and church policy. He is known particularly for his role as a leading figure in the Reformation at St. Andrews University, where he set up a school and encouraged the study of classical literature, philosophy and theology. He was known as an outspoken critic of the Church of England, and was imprisoned by James VI for his outspokenness. He wrote a number of works, including the Annals of the Reformers and Martyrs, which recounts stories of the reformers and martyrs of the faith. He was an important campaigner for the rights of lay citizens to have a direct role in church government and wrote strongly in favour of religious liberty.
