From Orient PointThe art of living isn't hard to muster: Enjoy the hour, not what it might portend. When someone makes you promises, don't trust herunless they're in the here and now, and just herwilling largesse free-handed to a friend. The art of living isn't hard to muster: groom the old dog, her coat gets back its luster; take brisk walks so you're hungry at the end. When someone makes you promises, don't trust herto know she can afford what they will cost herto keep until they're kept. Till then, pretendthe art of living isn't hard to muster. Cooking, eating and drinking are a clusterof pleasures. Next time, don't go round the bendwhen someone makes you promises. Don't trust herpast where you'd trust yourself, and don't adjust herwords to mean more to you than she'd intend. The art of living isn't hard to muster. You never had her, so you haven't lost herlike spare house keys. Whatever she opens, when someone makes you promises, don't. Trust yourart; go on living: that's not hard to muster.

I see how difficult it is to have or express sorrow in America. Anything byt that, we tell ourselves. We are afraid to let our public figures fall apart and be human. We are afraid of that ourselves. We marginalize, and we want to push away those of us who mourn. We want to make sure that they are different from us. It happened to you because there is something wrong with you, but it won't happen to me. But loss touches us all. Everyone has had a lost dream, a broken heart. It is not just American to be sad. We convince ourselves it is better to be busy, productive, exhausted than sad, depressed, or grieving. And certainly don't take longer than a few weeks. But grief takes time. Sometimes years, and often longer than we'd like.

For all her culture's attention to the physical, it seemingly has little to salve the creatural anguish of losing someone else's body, their touch, their heat, their oceanic heart.. She doesn't want another body, she wants the body she loved, the forceps scar across his cheek that she traced with her hand, his penis, its elegant sweep to the side, the preternaturally soft skin. One wants what one has loved, not the idea of love.

Every space in this house andmy town and the world in general, empty in a way that could never be filled.
