A. Philip Randolph

Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was a pioneering civil rights leader and labor organizer. He was a prominent and influential figure in the struggle for racial equality in the United States in the early 20th century. He founded and served as president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), the first African American labor organization to win a collective bargaining agreement with a major American company. This victory was a key event in the struggle for African American Equality. As an ardent advocate for black equality, Randolph also became an influential leader in the March on Washington Movement and organized several mass protests, most notably the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
