Alexander Mackenzie Quotes

Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie (1764-1820) was a Scottish explorer and the first recorded European to make an overland crossing from Canada's Pacific to Atlantic coasts. He followed an immense river, previously uncharted, that later became known as the Mackenzie River, and when he emerged onto the Arctic Ocean, he became the first explorer known to have crossed the entire continent. His explorations, however, did not prevent the Sioux and other natives from occupying the region and trading with the British-Canadian fur traders. Mackenzie was later knighted and continued to explore, eventually travelling more than 4,000 miles through Canada's heartland. Today, Alexander Mackenzie is considered one of Canada's most important explorers and a founding father of the country.
