Alfred Jarry

Alfred Jarry was a French symbolist writer who is best known for his darkly humorous and avant-garde play Ubu Roi (1896) and the concept of the pataphysical science. He is also known for his influential methods of "pataphysical illustration" and much of his work contained a strong element of self-referential and absurdist humor. His most notable works include the short novels Les minutes de sable mémorial (1894) and Exploits et opinions du Docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien (1911). Jarry also wrote a number of critical works on art and politics and was considered a seminal figure in the 'pataphysical movement. He is considered one of the fathers of modernism and 20th century theatre.
