Marriage. Why do we do it Everybody knows the stats. One in two marriages end up in broken dishes and a trip to Tijuana. Is it loneliness Partly. Is it teamwork Definitely. Things just kind of go easier when there's two of you. One of you can wait in line at the movie theater while the other guy parks the car. Get better seats that way. Better room rate when it's a double. Are you ready to file jointly.. Above you is the sun and sky. Below you, the ground. Like the sun, your love should be constant, like the ground, solid.

People whose understanding and taste in literature, painting, and music are beyond question are, for the most part, ignorant of what is good or bad art in the theater.

It was an accident, although Ive been involved in some kind of theatrical function or other since I was a child in school, music, athletics. To me, acting is the most logical way for peoples neuroses to manifest themselves, in this great need we all have to express ourselves. To my way of thinking, an actors course is set even before hes out of the cradle.

The best of our theater is standing on tiptoe, striving to see over the shoulders of father and mother. The worst is exploiting and wallowing in the self-pity of adolescence and obsessive keyhole sexuality. The way out, as the poet says, is always through.

From the time I was 7 or 8 years old, we were the roughest knockabout act that ever was in the history of the theater, not only in the United States but all over Europe as well. We used to get arrested every other week--that is, the old man would get arrested. The first crack out of the box here in New York state, the Keith office raised my age two years, because the original law said that no child under 5 could even look at the audience, let alone do anything. So they said I was 7. And the law read that a child can't do acrobatics, can't walk a wire, can't juggle--a lot of those things--but there was nothing said in the law that you can't kick him in the face or throw him through a piece of scenery. On that technicality, we were allowed to work, although we'd get called into court every other week, see.

You know when youre in a movie and you dont know anybody else in the theater and the most beautiful thing happens on the screen? Everybody there feels this overwhelming sense of whatever that emotion is? Youre surrounded by strangers but youre all feeling the same thing. The feeling is intensified because its being shared by three hundred people all at the same instant. Thats what we try to do, too.
