Angel Cordero Jr. is a Puerto Rican jockey who spent nearly four decades as one of the most successful thoroughbred horse racing jockeys in U.S. history. He won over 6,700 races, including the 1985 Kentucky Derby aboard Spend A Buck and three consecutive New York Filly Triple Crowns (1982–1984). Cordero was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1983, the Sports Hall of Fame of Puerto Rico in 1990 and received a bravo award from the Jockey Club of Puerto Rico in 2004. In 1988, Cordero was hospitalized after a serious accident at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland, shattering his ankle in four places; he returned riding within 10 months of the injury. In 2014, Cordero retired with one last ride at the 92nd edition of the Clasico del Caribe at the El Comandante Race Track in Puerto Rico.
