That was a pretty solid win in fairly hostile territory. I'm very proud of the guys, the match - it was a big match for [Florida State], they had their band out playing during the match and a lot of promotional assistance and they had a big crowd. It was a fun atmosphere in which to play.

Yeah, totally! I think you've nailed it! You know, I don't think SOULFLY sounds like SEPULTURA, myself. I think it's just that whole connection that people have with Max. I think it's just like a vibe thing with most fans. But I consider myself a fan of music first, and I agree with you. You know, I definitely think SOULFLY sounds like SOULFLY, and I think that SOULFLY is more of a groove-oriented band. As opposed to SEPULTURA, which was really thrashy and pretty much straight metal. I mean 'Roots' was a really groovy record, and half the songs on that were really groovy, but I think that that was a natural progression of the way that Max was writing at the time. And then, as opposed to the way we do stuff now.

With me and Bill.. I think we started out with 5 apiece and split the other 0 between the band.

There was James Burton, one of the greatest guitar players around, who played for Elvis years and years. Than there was another guitar player named Glenn Campbell just beginning with us. Billy Preston.. He was one of the piano players. Leon Russell was in the band. He was another one of the piano players. We had a lot of people like that just beginning, not even getting any notoriety.. They were just in the band and doing recording sessions.

We usually go to the state concert band competition during this week. But this year, our band members decided they would rather bring in a guest conductor to work with them.

I was in a band that wanted to make the move to Austin, because they had heard about the scene there,.. They kind of talked me into leaving school and moving. And then, at the last minute, they decided they didn't want to go. So I went there alone.

My dad would moonlight back then,.. He'd worked his way through college in a band before he became an opera singer. I'd been playing guitar all my life, but he recruited me to play drums when I was about 10. We played country clubs and stuff. He taught me drums for a good reason. I worked real cheap.

We're not a studio band, so this isn't our best. We still have more to say.
It's pretty much a representation of the direction we're going in. This is our first studio experience where we can overdub and correct things. But we're definitely not a studio band.

At that time, that was the biggest thing we had done with the band. As a 17-year-old, that definitely took the cake.

If you move one thing, you probably have to move something else and that can be very time consuming. You might spend an hour trying to solve one act's problem. They might share a guitarist with another band playing the same time. And that has to be resolved. And that could take an hour and an hour this time of year is hard to come by.

[That the band chose Harrisburg, better known for the Pennsylvania Chili Cookoff than a raucous hotbed of music, is an example of its theory of controlled success. Rather than trying to be a] an itty-bitty fish in a big pond like New York,.. The band built up a fan-base in Harrisburg and then began playing larger surrounding cities to get exposure.

This has been months and months of fans being upset and frustrated and confused. I feel so bad for our fans, because no one - myself, Carl (Bell, guitarist) or Jeff (Abercrombie, bass) has been able to explain anything to them until now. Now we can actually say things and let them know what's going on. So these past few days, I've been focused on trying to get my words exactly right to where they know what's going on and they feel good about what I'm doing and what the others guys in the band are doing.

You know what? Fuel is what Fuel is, the X's are what the X's are. John used to band Banana Fish Zero had a lot of songs, too. But that's what that was, and that's where it's going to stay. So we're not doing any Banana Fish songs or Fuel songs, or any of the stuff that Chris and Mike have done in the past. We're doing the X'sthat's what it's all about.

My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation on to this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners.

[Brian Hoffman, a 2005 graduate of Pearce High School in Richardson, was in New Orleans for five days to start his freshman year at Tulane University. He had already started practice with the Tulane March Band when the school issued an order to evacuate. So Hoffman, a pre-med student, will take classes at the University of Texas at Dallas.] It's just unreal. It's disappointing,.. And making sure we come back [to Tulane] in the spring.

I don't want to go and see a band that has no original members,.. Or if the drummer was the original member, and it was a surf band -- I don't care. The upfront guys really matter to me.
