Alejandro Toledo is a Peruvian politician who served as the President of Peru from 2001 to 2006. He has also served as Prime Minister of Peru and several other government positions. Toledo was born in 1945 in the coastal city of Cabana in the Ancash region of Peru. He went on to study economics at the University of San Francisco and Stanford, where he earned a Ph.D. During his tenure as President, Toledo strengthened Peru’s economy, presided over a period of economic growth, reduced poverty and invested in infrastructure. He also raised taxes on the wealthy and implemented policies to protect the environment. Toledo left office in 2006 with a 65 percent approval rating. In the years since, Toledo has continued his public service and advocacy for human rights, democracy, and free market economy.
