A recent statewide poll showed our nickname is not offensive to a majority of American Indian people and, interestingly, one of four Indians polled indicate support for UND would be reduced if we changed the name. We are awaiting the results of our appeal to the NCAA.

I guess that the FSU exemption will be interpreted the way people want to see it, whether it is a red light or green light. The National Congress is going to stay vigilant and work so there aren't glaring examples of racism and stereotyping involving the use of a mascot or logo that will be exempted from the NCAA's historic decision.

The lettering below the logo on the flag at No 42 is so small as to be almost illegible, and whilst this flag is contrary to the council's guideline due to that lettering, the level of departure is not significant and approval is recommended. Although the University of North Dakota maintained that its logo and nickname are used with consummate respect, the position of the namesake tribes and those affected by the hostile or abusive environment that the nickname and logo create take precedence.
