A. P. Herbert Quotes

A. P. Herbert

Sir Alan Patrick Herbert, KBE, commonly known as A. P. Herbert, was an English humorist, novelist, playwright and law reformer. He was a Member of Parliament for Oxford University from 1935 to 1950, and he is best remembered for his campaign to reform the British legal system in the 1930s, which led to the implementation of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1937. He wrote over 50 books, a mixture of novels, plays, poetry and legal reform, and was a long time satirical columnist in Punch magazine. He also wrote the popular comic song, "All Along the West End Provisional Underground Railways", which highlighted two major problems facing Londoners at the time – congestion and air pollution.
