Just remember that those who feel profoundly depressed are those whose happiness is likewise intense. What's so wrong with that?

If you believe suicide will bring you peace, or at the very least just an end to everything you hate- you are displaying self-caring behavior. You are still able to actively seek solutions to your problems. You are willing to go to great lengths to provide what you believe will be soothing to yourself. This strikes me as optimistic.

An event of great agony is bearable only in the belief that it will bring about a better world. When it does not, as in the aftermath of another vast calamity in 1914-18, disillusion is deep and moves on to self-doubt and self-disgust.

Life has moments that feel as if the sun has blackened to tar and the entire world turned to ice.? It feels as if Hades rose from the depths of Tartarus with his vile demons solely for the purpose of gathering to personally torture you, and that their genuine intent of mental, emotional, and spiritual anguish is tearing you to shreds.? Your heart weighs as heavily as leaden legs which you would drag yourself forward with if not for the quicksand that overcomes you, pulling you down inch by inch, paralyzing your will and threatening oblivion.? And all the while fire and brimstone pour from the sky, pelting only you.? Truly, that is what it feels like. But that feeling is a trial that won't last forever.? Never give up.

At times it may seem as though you and your past are one. Sometimes we fail to differentiate between what has happened to us and who we are today. If you have a hard time getting beyond that damaging mind-set let me encourage you right now. You are not your past Although you are changed and shaped by past experiences who you were yesterday does not control the person you have the potential to become tomorrow.

How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are at the beginning of all peoples, the myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us. So you must not be frightened if a sadness rises up before you larger than any you have ever seen; if a restiveness, like light and cloudshadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any miseries, or any depressions? For after all, you do not know what work these conditions are doing inside you.

In 1965, a psychologist named Martin Seligman started shocking dogs. He was trying to expand on the research of Pavlov--the guy who could make dogs salivate when they heard a bell ring. Seligman wanted to head in the other direction, and when he rang his bell, instead of providing food, he zapped the dogs with electricity. To keep them still, he restrained them in a harness during the experiment. After they were conditioned, he put these dogs in a big box with a little fence dividing it into two halves. He figured if the dog rang the bell, it would hop over the fence to escape, but it didn't. It just sat there and braced itself. They decided to try shocking the dog after the bell. The dog still just sat there and took it. When they put a dog in the box that had never been shocked before or had previously been allowed to escape and tried to zap it--it jumped the fence. You are just like these dogs. If, over the course of your life, you have experienced crushing defeat or pummeling abuse or loss of control, you convince yourself over time that there is no escape, and if escape is offered, you will not act--you become a nihilist who trusts futility above optimism. Studies of the clinically depressed show that they often give in to defeat and stop trying... Any extended period of negative emotions can lead to you giving in to despair and accepting your fate. If you remain alone for a long time, you will decide loneliness is a fact of life and pass up opportunities to hang out with people. The loss of control in any situation can lead to this state... Choices, even small ones, can hold back the crushing weight of helplessness, but you can't stop there. You must fight back your behavior and learn to fail with pride. Failing often is the only way to ever get the things you want out of life. Besides death, your destiny is not inescapable.

When we read the newspapers, watch the broadcasts, soak up the stories, we find ourselves repressed, depressed and confused. We find ourselves envious, anxious, angry and fearful. If we believe all that is circulated by the media we become loyal supporters of the oppressors, passionate haters of the innocents, faithful believers of bullshit and puppets of evil. Mind management is greater than necessary. I believe it is wise to question all that we are told. If we give our time to all that is spoon fed to us, we allow our minds to be hooked, hot wired, taken from us, remotely controlled.. I look around and everywhere I see stewing or stewed, fermented, tormented souls and marinated morons.. And then I see you, precious few.. You, who reconsiders.. You, who questions the credibility of a story, you, who never forgets that there are always at least two sides.. You, who feels before you think and thinks before you speak. Beautiful you, who wonders, who looks with wide open eyes, an open heart, an open mind. You, who wanders from the crowd and who seeks something which FEELS true. I love you! I can't get enough of you and the world needs hundreds of thousands more people like you.

It is madness. And if you don't know who you are, or if your real self has drifted away from you with the undertow, madness at least gives you an identity. It's the same with self-loathing. You're probably just normal and normal-looking but that's not a real identity, not the way ugliness is. Normality, just accepting that you're probably normal-looking, lacks the force field of self-disgust. If you don't know who you are, madness gives you something to believe in.

Listen to the people who love you. Believe that they are worth living for even when you don't believe it. Seek out the memories depression takes away and project them into the future. Be brave; be strong; take your pills. Exercise because it's good for you even if every step weighs a thousand pounds. Eat when food itself disgusts you.
