Most of the time, somebody has a good story and adds the songs to it later. This show seems to be worked from the completely opposite angle. Billy wrote the music and lyrics, and Twyla grabs it and makes the show.

I've always enjoyed reading lyrics, trying to do them more than just lyrics, trying to have some more meaning in them. I know a lot of people are just happy to have a kind of broken word lyrics. I just wonder why, there's no reason why they can't at least attempt to do something a bit better.

There's a major street in every city that separates the poor from the rest of the community in an effort to contain social problems. The lyrics convey the real truth of living in the urban neighborhoods; they include characters and incidents that I have witnessed.

The gay liberation movements in various parts of the world, particularly in England, have begun to take a very vocal stance against the more overt lyrics that rain down fire on homosexuals,.. They've been trying to say that this is metaphoric speech, but the brutalization of many homosexuals in Jamaica speaks otherwise.

Listen to the lyrics - we're singing about everyday life: rich people trying to keep money, poor people tying to get it, and everyone having trouble with their husband or wife!

[Purity is definitely something the Followills kicked under the church pew a long time ago, not only when it comes to their lifestyle but also their music. What critics and fans alike love (or despise) about the Kings' sound is Caleb's muttered, unkempt delivery and indiscernible lyrics that invite constant analysis.] First I think it was just out of insecurity -- I didn't want everyone to understand what I was saying,.. But eventually it got to the point where I was proud of the way I was writing and admitting to it.

Our lyrics are about a lot of things. They are not very introspective. For example, the song 'Panic Prone' is about drugs, this idea about kids getting drugged up and medicating themselves and whether to help people or not help people at all.

Stacey's realistic lyrics and vocals are easily understood; soothing and gentle in parts, but angry and outspoken in others. Stacey has a lot to say and sings it well!

I've had people come up to me with the strangest interpretations of what lyrics might mean, and I'm like, 'You go! I never thought of that, but that works,'.. I think true art is a universal reflection, and true artists are just messengers of that reflection - or, at best, skilled presenters.

If you look at the lyrics, I could be writing that about myself or about the government and hopefully that's the power of the song,.. It makes sense about the government -- 'what you've done here is put yourself between the bullet and the target.' I believe they did that. And I also put myself in life in harm's way. People sometimes are born in positions like that and sometimes they put themselves there. And they have to get out.

In the rap world, it's very common to take a song and rearrange it and give it new lyrics. Remixes [such as this] are not strictly legal, but they're accepted.

System of a Down are one of the most misunderstood bands around. I mean, Armenian rock? What the fuck is that? Political? I could name so many more of our songs that aren't about politics than ones that are. And for a long time, everyone thought Serj wrote all of our tunes. Until this album came out, people thought he wrote all the lyrics. So there are so many different misunderstandings of System of a Down that I don't even let it bother me anymore. I'm just kind of used to it. Our first bio said something like 'four guys based out of LA who are Armenian and political,' and, well, it wasn't really right at all. I mean, we are all Armenian, but we didn't plan that.

We all have different kinds of tastes and thoughts about what we are all about because the music is such a personal thing for us... I think we have always made an effort to make our lyrics build a bridge between the personal experiences we have and the personal experiences of someone coming to a show. That people say it has helped them in some way puts the highest meaning in the band. We feel we are out there making a living doing what we love, and it is affecting people.

I actually think it's harder to write a song than poetry. I try to pick words that sound lyrical and good and have the right amount of meaning, but if I read them written down, it looks awful. That's why a lot of times, the lyrics come afterward for me, and those somehow have more meaning than having a lyrical idea first and putting music to it.

We understand the Wal-Mart customer and know that bringing them Garth Brooks exclusives in the upcoming years is something that'll excite them as much as it excites us,.. Blake was an activist and artist whose lifestyle truly reflected his values,.. He was the lead singer of Parallax, whose (song) lyrics involve a deep reflection on the alienation produced by our consumerist society. Of all the students I have had over my six years at UVSC, Blake was the most authentic.

I've been really blessed that I've had two of the most prolific songwriters existing today, and especially from the lyrical part of it all Hal David has and always will write lyrics that speak to your heart, not at it,.. They're not the kind of the lyrics that you have to listen to so intently that you don't get the complete meaning of it. It applies to those who are age 6 to 60 and everything in between. Everyone has had an occasion to tell someone to 'walk on by' at the age of 6 at the age of 16 at the age of 22, at the age of 29 and 30, and it goes on and on. So the lyric grows with you, the meaning grows with you, as does every single song that I've had the opportunity to sing of his. I think those are the lessons that we all learn from music generally. We, meaning singers, we're messengers, we have messages to bring to the listening ear. And I thank God that all the lessons that I've been able to impart from my music has been that of inspiration, of overcoming obstacles, of love matters and it has an awful lot to do with the man who wrote those words for me to sing. Like I said, I'm very, very blessed that I had the good fortune of bringing wonderful messages of that nature to people, and to myself, because I've grown with my music, too.

It has been amazing to see how Trent has grown as a music artist, his lyrics have taken on a new meaning now because they are so real. I think, like a lot of artists, in the early stages he spent time questioning what he was supposed to be and when he found that what he was looking for was what he had always known, himself, it was a turning point.
